M House, Sculptor

M House grew up in Southern California.

She felt a kinship with animals at an early age. Her sister showed her how to draw horses, and with lots of practice, drawing became the first integral step toward her love of sculpting.

M received a Bachelor's of Fine art in Sculpture from California State University at Long Beach. She was awarded the distinction of "Sculptor of The Year" by her professors upon graduation. She went on to do extensive hands-on study in every aspect of the bronze foundry process, and eventually cast her sculptures in bronze.

M sculpts in a realistic style, representing animal anatomy in great detail. Viewers are drawn to her sculptures for their verisimilitude, their unique narrative quality. Each sculpture suggests an individual character with specific personality traits all their own. Her bronze Rat, meets the observers gaze directly with an expression that is equal parts bravado and curiosity. Her bronze Hippopotamus' heavy gaze and languid posture invites the viewer to sit down, with their feet up with a good beer after a day at work. Both pieces are clear examples of the dynamic personalities that M brings to her animals. Drawing people into the world that animals create with their broad and relatable expressions. When asked M said, "So many complete strangers have come to me at openings with an amazing verity of animal stories".

M house was awarded the Fredericksburg Artist Scholarship at the American Women Artists Annual National Competition in 2000, and the Bedi-Makky Foundry Prize for Bronze Sculpture at The National Sculpture Society Annual Show in 1999.

Her work appeared in group exhibitions at The Art on the Prairie Wildlife Sculpture Exhibition at Wildlife Prairie State Park in Peoria, Illinois (June-October 2003). Manitou Gallery, Santa Fe, New Mexico (December 2002-December 2003); Contemporary Southwest Gallery in Santa Fe (2000); The Sculpture Works, Santa Fe (July 2000, September 2000, September 2002); Laguna Festival of Art in Laguna Beach, California (1982); and The Art Affair, Laguna Beach (1981). She is also a member of the National Sculpture Society.

Regarding her current work, M stated, "The motivation for me is to create dialogues; a story between the viewer and the sculpture. I want to spark a connection, a reaction. Weather the action is stepping forward to rub the belly of my Hippo, or stepping back when seeing my Possum, I have succeeded".

M currently lives and works in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
